Hiking trail to Allume Bay

Wonderful view from the cliffs

The path to Cala dell’Allume starts in the Valle dell’Ortana of Giglio Campese at the bus depot and leads in a few minutes to a viewpoint above the bay with a spectacular panorama. From there, a fairly steep path leads down to the sea, where the remains of the Franco mine can still be seen.

From Giglio Campese, start on foot or by car on the tarmac road that leads slightly uphill through the Ortana Valley.

At the end of the road, where the bus depot is located, take trail n. 301 to Allume on the right and after a few minutes you will reach the overhang of Cala dell’Allume.

Hiking route

Allume Bay

Trail 301 to Cala dell’Allume starts at the end of the tarmac road in the Ortana Valley at the bus depot.

After less than five minutes through a shady grove of holm oaks, you ‘suddenly’ find yourself above Cala dell’Allume, which drops steeply into the sea, enjoying a spectacular panorama surrounded by the scent of rosemary.

Although the descent and subsequent ascent are quite steep, the path is suitable for everyone.

The rocks are not particularly comfortable for a day of swimming, but you can still take a dip. There used to be an old mine in the bay, the  Miniera del Franco, so it is rich in ferrous materials and small fragments of pyrite can also be found.

For those leaving from the Campese bus stop, 4 kilometres must be added for the round trip.

Route connections: From the Ortana Valley, path 323 (later 323 or 309) leads up to the village of Giglio Castello.
